This month in our garden

I thought it would be nice to bring back the monthly garden posts, with photos from the BHP garden. Once things get growing here in Ohio, I intend including some pictures of my own more modest efforts as well.

Calendula flower. One of our recent harvests from the BHP garden was calendula. This is used in a number of our oils and salves.

Wild onion in bloom. An early spring flower with a pungent scent.

Fennel. A favorite of my mom’s (she loved everything licorice flavored) and of the swallowtail butterfly.

My backyard. We have lived here for two years and had to replace the retaining wall last year, so I feel like I am starting with a clean slate. It is still too early to plant much of anything (we had a frost warning last night!) so I am just biding time. Even having grown up absorbing my mom’s garden knowledge, I feel like such a neophyte. I am intending for the long bed where the daffodils are blooming to be mostly a flower bed, but will be incorporating plants for butterflies and bees. It is definitely a work in progress!
