A recent study suggests that walking may help improve memory impairment in older adults. By taking a brisk walk where you get your heart rate up for 40 minutes three times a week, participants in the study performed better on memory tests. Additionally, the size of their hippocampus, the area in the brain that deals with memory formation, increased by as much as 2 percent.
Walking is an accessible exercise. You can take a walk around the block, or on the beach. Find somewhere that is inspiring and take your walks there. As with anything, if you enjoy the activity, you will be more inclined to repeat it. Losing brain mass is as we age is a normal course of action and it leads to memory impairment in older generations. Walking is something that everyone can do and as an added bonus, you are assisting your brain to grow new neurons. What’s keeping you?

Additionally, a separate study found that outdoor workouts resulted in greater revitalization, increased energy, and more positive engagement, along with less depression, anger, confusion, and tension. Just another reason to get outside and go for a walk!
